One day, seven Pardhan Gond brothers were tilling their jute field. They saw a handsome man galloping on a white horse right through their field and crushing the jute saplings. They chased the rider but He disappeared into the Saja Tree. They then realized that the rider was Bada Dev, their Supreme Deity. They were scared of invoking His wrath and tried to appease him with offerings of rar lentils and Mahua wine, and with the sacrifice of a rooster and a goat.

They pleaded with Him to emerge and forgive them, but in vain. Finally, the youngest brother  made a one-stringed musical instrument with a branch of a Khirsani tree. The brother played the instrument and sang paeans of Bada Dev. On hearing the songs, Bada Dev made an appearance. He blessed the Gond who had made the instrument, and told him that whenever anyone sang His song accompanied by the musical instrument, He would make an appearance. He told them to call the musical instrument a “Bana".

The youngest brother came to be known as a Pardhan and he played the Bana to please Bada Dev. He gave up working on the land; the remaining six brothers took care of his daily needs. Once a year, the Pardhan visited his Gond Yajamans (patrons) and narrated mythical stories and genealogies, and invoked Bada Dev under the Saja tree. The Pardhan Gonds were responsible for passing the traditions and the myths of the Gonds verbally through songs sung to the accompaniment of the Bana.

The Bana is a one-stringed musical instrument with bells on the bow which accentuate every stroke.
