In days of yore, people used to stash away their wealth in a pot made of copper, which the Gond tribals refer to as “batua”. They would then bury the batua in a secret location in their fields.

If the person died unexpectedly, without having dug out the batua prior, the snakes would guard over the batua. They would also move it from one spot to another, in order to keep it from falling into the hands of the wrong person. If anyone tried to take possession of the batua, the snakes would strike and kill him.
