The Baiga tribals, with a population just under 400,000, live in thick woodland areas in Madhya Pradesh and the neighbouring states of India. The Baiga have lived in Central India for over 20,000 years and claim to be the harbingers of the human race and history in India. They believe that they were the chosen few who were hand-crafted by God Himself and, hence, were the kings and rulers of the whole earth. Notwithstanding this, they live a simple life. Their homes are not adorned nor do they wear any ornaments.

The Baiga live a semi-nomadic life and practice shifting cultivation in the forest areas. They see themselves as people of the forest, who could only live on the produce of the forest. They never ploughed the Earth, because it would be akin to scratching the breast of their Mother, and they could never ask their Mother to produce food from the same patch of earth time and time again – She would have become weakened. These practices, rather than being a cause of deforestation, have been shown to be effective conservation devices.

Tattooing is an integral part of the lifestyle of the Baiga tribe. 

In this painting, the Baiga tribals are depicted building a tree-home, which they live in in order to stay safe from the predators in the forest.
